This 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S sedan is finished in maroon over a dark red MB-Tex interior and is powered by a 2.2L M180 inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes 13″ wheels, fog lights, and a Blaupunkt stereo. The car was acquired in the USA six years ago by the seller. The car had a refurbishment 11 years ago, that included an exterior repaint, a rebuild of the twin Solex carburetors, a brake system refresh and a new timing chain.
Originally Medium Red (516G), the body was refinished in maroon, and a new windshield with accompanying seal were also added. Optional fog lights are fitted, and the seller states stone chips are present around the body and the front and rear chrome bumpers show wear.
Factory 13” steel wheels wear polished hubcaps with beauty rings and are wrapped in Maxxis MA-1 90S white wall tires. A new tie rod was fitted, and that the braking system was overhauled with a new a booster, hoses, wheel cylinders, and shoes.
The interior is trimmed in dark red accented by a full wood dash, door caps, and window surrounds. Equipment includes a locking glove box, a period-style Blaupunkt stereo with AUX input, and a column-mounted shifter. Tears are present on the side of the driver’s seat, and rust repair was performed in the front floors and the spare tire well.
VDO instrumentation includes a horizontal-sweep 110-mph speedometer along with gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows just over 96k miles.
The 2.2L M180 inline-six produced 105 horsepower when new, which is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The dual Solex downdraft carburetors were rebuilt in January 2020, and that additional work included a new timing chain, water pump, fuel tank, and engine mounts.
This Mercedes has been stored in a dry storage facility since 2020. The car will therefore require some servicing before it is used again. The car starts and runs. The Ponton was imported into the EU but still has papers from the state of New York.
