Toyota wanted a new sports car that would appeal to more average buyers. Toyota also made a sedan called the Carina using the same floorplan, mechanicals and interior. By making 2 cars from the one design, Toyota saved a lot of money. The Celica and the Carina were so similar that they were built on the same production line.
The original Celica dated back to the 1970 Tokyo Motor Show, where it shared media attention with the Carina. At launch there were two versions available, the LT (entry level) and ST (upmarket), both aimed at being more affordable versions of Toyota's sportscar, the 2000GT.
This Celica TA23 is from the 1,5 (23 series) generation. The 1.588 cc engine with a twin carburettor, the 2T-B delivered new 86 HP. The Coupe has the same basic shape as first generation but slightly longer between the front wheels and the doors. The front style introduced in 1973 on the Japanese models now used in all markets (lengthened to suit new chassis). Also it got a new style dash.
Finished in British Racing Green with Brown interior this older restoration is immaculate. Excellent detailed engine bay. This beautifully Celica was imported to Netherlands in 2013.
